"College Chronicles" is a small episode of blogs that feature the initial experiences of my days in higher education.
The digital clock resting on top of a soon-to-be neglected Xbox 360, reads 11:31 PM. I am sitting on my brand new bed, hiding my legs underneath a pale yellow blanket, but still allowing my freshly manicured toenails to poke out and kiss the cool air.
Classes Today:
Math: 9:00 - 10:00 AM
Biology: 1:00 - 2:30 PM
My very first day of college did not ignite emotions that I was anticipating. I am
not implying that the day's events or the idea of college was a bore or a pain- I was just simply surprised with myself. Normally, I get that subtle case of butterflies, a light dose of anxiety, an excitement churning in my stomach to begin anew. However this did not prevail. I slept soundly, comfortably. And even as I awoke at 6 AM, turning on my black, glossy Samsung TV to Channel 13 News, I was without utter enthusiasm.
Upon my first day, I have learned several key lessons in the survival of my life as a student commuter at the University of Houston:
1. Always remember your climate: Houston is the fourth largest metropolitan city, but it is also one hot bitch, so avoid jeans/pants at all costs, embrace your shorts and sandals, and hold on to them for dear life until the cooler half of the autumn season arrives.
2. Despite how profusely you may sweat throughout the day, it is wise to stuff a light sweater or jacket in your backpack. Some deodorant and/or perfume are useful too.
3. If you love Starbucks, this applies to you: Don't ruin that wonderfully brewed cup of hot java by enjoying it on a shady bench inhabited by ants.
4. Try to sit with someone you feel comfortable next to, not the latter. Avoid weirdos whose fragrance consist of trash and smoke. Nothing is worse than enduring an 80 minute class with the combination of a lecture from a monotone professor and an annoying, smelly kid that keeps hitting your foot because he just can't keep still.
Ah, college. Cheers, to tomorrow: another first day.
